ZIP SHELL FOR WINDOWS AND DOS
=============================
PKZip and PKUnzip from PKWare are now the industry standard for
lossless compression of files. They have a host of features, and even
support the addition of descriptions to compressed files. However,
they are also command driven, which makes them difficult to use for
non experts. In addition, there is no way to add or extract 4Dos file
descriptions.
There are other shells for PKZip & PKUnzip on the market. Some of them
are undoubtedly quite good. But what I wanted was a program that would
let you tag files to add to a ZIP file, and then add them along with
their 4Dos file descriptions. In the same way I wanted to be able to
tag the files in ZIP file, and extract them along with their 4DOS file
descriptions. I also wanted to be able to see the descriptions along
with the files. None of the available shells I looked at would do
this.
In 1989 I wrote the first version of ZIP.EXE to do this in a DOS
environment. When I moved to Windows 3.0, I became fed up with having
to open a DOS window to go and zip or unzip files. Finally I got
around to writing a Windows equivalent that could be launched from
program manager - ZIPW.EXE.
Both these programs serve the same function that of adding files to
and extracting files from a ZIP file, while automating the add/extract
of the associated 4DOS descriptions. Of the two, ZIPW is more
sophisticated, using as it does the Multiple Document Interface to
permit you to work on more than one ZIP file at a time. One of these
days I will get around to rewriting the Dos version to provide similar
features.
Until then, ZIPW is V2.0, while ZIP is only V1.2. Both support the new
V2.04g of PKZip and PKUnzip which is the latest version at time of
writing.

Installation
============
Windows Version
---------------
Place the disk in your drive, and from program manager type
RUN a:SETUP.EXE
or RUN b:SETUP.EXE
Answer the question about the destination drive. The software
should be installed automatically, and a Program manager group
should be created. You can later move the icons to another
group if you desire.
If you do not have a copy of PKZIP & PKUNZIKP, you should then
follow the DOS installation instructions to install PKZip &
PKUnzip on your disk.
If all you received was the file ZIPW20.ZIP or ZIPW20.EXE,
then all the files have been archived into this file. In this
case you need to extract all the files to either your hard
disk or your floppy disk before you can run SETUP:
From DOS, copy the file to yor hard disk and extract the files
for .ZIP type in PKUNZIP -E ZIPW20
for .EXE type in ZIPW20
Then run SETUP from program manager as described above
DOS Version
-----------
Place the disk in drive A: or B: and make that drive the
default by typing in A: or B: and press ENTER (or RETURN)
Type in INSTALL
Answer the question about the destination drive, and whether
you want PKZIP and PKUNZIP installed as well.
